Dear Parents & Guardians
My name is Karla Joseph-Bartkiw. As a guidance counselor, social worker with a background in Behavioral and Trauma therapy, and life coach, I have dedicated my career to helping families navigate both the emotional and academic sides of education. Over the past 16 years, I have worked closely with diverse student populations and their families, many navigating complex educational, social, and emotional challenges. My work has always centered around helping parents better understand the education system, bridging the gap between families and educators, and ensuring that each child’s voice is heard and their needs met. IEPs are not just legal documents to me, they are tools for empowerment, progress, and hope.
As an advocate, I am especially passionate about demystifying the special education process for parents. I help families understand that every child can and will learn-with the right tools, supports, and a strong network in place. I guide parents in asking the key questions that initiate the evaluation process, navigating the system with confidence, and preparing for important meetings such as the initial assessment and annual IEP meeting. I am a firm believer in early intervention and in building support systems that meet each child where they are. I provide compassionate support while helping families recognize their rights and take an active role in shaping their child’s educational journey. My experience allows me to approach advocacy with empathy, clear communication, and a deep knowledge of both systemic policies and individualized strategies. Over the years, I have become a trusted resource for many parents seeking guidance on services and support. I now offer per diem and consultation services as an IEP advocate and counselor. I am fluent in French and Creole and have working knowledge of Spanish, making me especially equipped to support multilingual families who may be unfamiliar with the process of self-advocacy.
I have sat at many IEP tables, sometimes as a counselor and social worker, other times simply as a voice for a child who needed one. I believe every parent deserves someone in their corner who can translate policies into possibilities and make sure their child’s strengths and needs are never overlooked. I would love the opportunity to bring my experience and heart for this work to your table. Should you need a consultation, please do not hesitate to contact me. Sincerely,
Karla Joseph- Bartkiw
